Now that you know what happens during these exhaustion reversal setups you now know why it is not critical that a high probability manipulation point is broken. Banks break through high probability levels to take out stops and accumulate or exit positions. In these day trading setups however the move itself creates enough liquidity for them to exit their position therefore breaking through a high probability level is not essential.

How To Ride The Wave The Banks Create.

Its important to not be greedy. We could try to figure out a way to catch the exhaustion move itself but in general its much easier to take the trade the following day. Not only does taking the trade the following day give us time to really be sure were not forcing a trade, but it also gives the market time to provide even more confirmation of direction. How then is the entry taken the following day. In the chart below the grey box to the left is the same Asian session box you see in the charts above. The taller/skinnier box is the 8-11 AM Eastern NY session time block.

In the chart above this is the 15 minute chart the day after the 1H exhaustion candle setup the day before. The trade is taken when we see a proper stop run or stop run topping formation above the Asian highs. If you are unfamiliar with the criteria needed for these two entries you can check out the forex training video on timing your entires. Within this trade setup we see a massive amount of confirmation. Not only did the initial exhaustion trend reversal itself show you the change in market direction, but the following day smart money creates the stop run or false push which validates the day trading setup and entry even more.

At best you should expect to see this once a week per pair. It you to trade forex and work a full time job, and do so with a sound and logical trading strategy. For those who cannot be around the following day to place entries manually, pending orders can be used above the highest probability manipulation points. This allows you to look at the market once a day after coming home from work. Like anything else it will take practice. Forex is anything and everything BUT a get rich quick scheme. It takes a logical and sound forex trading strategy to trade forex profitably. How The “End of Day Trading” Can Change Your Life.

Do you want to be able to trade Forex, but can’t spend all day in front of a computer watching charts for a trading signal?

Any internet search including the word Forex will immediately serve you a plethora of popular high frequency trading systems, surrounded by those attractive money buzzwords.

These heavily marketed Forex systems are pushed in front of you through banners and annoying pop ups.

If you’ve ever had the misfortune of actually adopting one of these systems and you put your heart into it – you will already know first hand these over-hyped packages never deliver on what they promised. My condolences – we’ve all been there.

Today, I would like to introduce you to a far superior stress-free and relaxed approach to trading Forex that yields much more reward potential than those rapid paced, mentally draining trading strategies.

I love the “end of day” trading approach. Its great because you only have to spend a small amount of your time in front of the charts per day, and have a much better chance of achieving the results you want for less effort.

Keep your day job and still do well with your trading.

Forex trading, much like any form of market speculation will always come with an element of risk. Being able to manage that risk effectively will be the difference between success and failure.

One of the biggest advantages of end of day trading is the way in which it allows traders to carry out their trading activity around a demanding day job or other various time consuming life commitments.

Whether you are: working full time or part time, studying, trying to progress with your career, or even a stay-at - home parent (maybe a combination of a few of these) – the techniques used in end of day trading will slide easily into your schedule, all without compromising your trading potential.

Most new traders have stumbled across Forex trading because they are looking for a “quick fix”.

It’s the same old story really. People are brainwashed to think Forex is the means to quickly solve all their financial problems, and when opening a new trading account they’re already dreaming of buying that private island they’ve always wanted.

If you’ve ever seen the the Matrix series, a popular quote from the first movie is “nobody ever makes the first jump” & # 8211؛ well, this is the perfect metaphor for the markets.

It’s pretty safe to say 100% of Forex traders lose money and blow their first live trading accounts – this is nothing to be ashamed of though, I see it as part of the initiation into the Forex world. It’s where you truly start grasping the realities of Forex trading.

Many of us dream of one day being able to chuck in our day jobs, switching to full time Forex trading and relying only on our trading income to support us. Until that happens though, you will still need a steady, consistent income to pay your bills and put food on the table.

This is where end of day trading really shines, because you’re only required to interact with the markets for very short periods of time each day – I am talking as little as 15-20 minutes.

During those 20 minutes, you will be able to:

Do a quick, but effective scan of all your favorite markets to identify high probability trading opportunities Place any pending orders to take advantage of retracement prices, or catch any breakouts Place a logical stop loss that protects you if the market moves against you, and your trade idea fails Adjust any levels on your chart, or trail your stop loss if that’s something you wish to do Perform any other chart maintenance.

Live your life, Don’t be a slave to the charts.

I cannot stress it enough.

An unbelievably large percentage of traders with all levels of experience, even mores so the newbies – spend far too much time glued to chart, hypnotized by the rise and fall of the candlesticks.

It’s easy to understand why most traders have an addiction problem with Forex, the main reason obviously being that money is involved.

Every trader has been in a situation where they are swept up in the excitement of seeing an open trade explode into nice profits. It brings on a euphoric feeling that plays with you, and tempts you to trade more. You don’t feel like you can lose at this stage, you’re the king of the charts right now!

The difference between “chart junkies” and educated traders, is not letting the euphoric feeling of winning money influence your trading behavior and having the ability to step away and break the connection.

The “chart junkies” who can’t disconnect fall into a really bad ‘zone’ where a sickness starts to fester. Not being able to sleep properly, letting anxiety build up and thinking about the charts obsessively throughout the day.

The draining and mind numbing effects take their toll not only on the individual’s account, but also on their day-to-day life.

I’ve seen troubled traders who have let the markets get to them. It’s not hard to tell something is eating away at them from inside – it impacts their social life and they sometimes become a very negative person to be around.

These guys/gals become so obsessed with every pip movement, they feel the need to constantly stare at the screen just waiting for something to happen.

I’ve been to this dark place – spending hours in front of my computer, passing off the opportunity to hang out with friends or go on dates with girls…all because I was addicted to trading.

You feel like you have a commitment to stay ready at the charts because you can’t afford to miss any trading opportunities – wasting away hours and hours of your life. It’s very unhealthy, you don’t sleep well and easily can fall into depression.

This is the main reason I switched to end of day style trading. It helped me detox this bad behavior and get back on track with trading. I’ve never looked back.

End of the day trading is sometimes called “close of play” (officially defined as the New York Stock Exchange close).

The main goal is to focus your trading efforts at a key time where you can see exactly what happened during that 24 hour Forex session. This gives you time to setup your trade orders before you go back to your busy life.

When you adopt this ‘time-friendly’ strategy, you can really minimize your risk in trading, mitigate any undesired lifestyle changes, and take positive steps towards learning how to properly spot and enter a Forex trade.

It’s hard to argue with a system that allows you to keep your day job while you learn, continue to spend time with friends and family and even not have to substitute this new venture with any hobbies or interests that you would otherwise have been doing in your spare time. It’s a hard deal to beat.

Lower Your trading frequency, Be Rewarded With higher accuracy.

Now be honest with yourself, if you’re reading this – the chances are you may have blown a trading account or two by adopting high volume systems like scalping and other day trading strategies.

If that’s the case, you’re probably frustrated and looking for a way to approach the markets that will reward you with better success.

The fact of the matter is that every time you open a trade, no matter what it is, you increase your risk exposure.

The problem is low time frame charts give out lots of high risk signals that can easily trap you into bad positions. Also low frequency trading systems tend to use very tight stops, so the market can stop you out if it ticks against you a couple of points.

Unfortunately traders often interpret high volumes of signals as lots of opportunities to make profit. The misconception is: more candles = more signals = more money.

You can never predict the market with 100% accuracy – which is what a lot of new traders are gunning for.

There are a lot of trading systems out there advertised to have a 85% win rate. These kind of systems generally capitalize on short term market conditions, and are considered to have a “low shelf life”.

These are “churn and burn” kind of strategies are susceptible high losses when the market behavior shifts to adapt with current events.

Traders who step back and look at the bigger picture, and contrast the daily time frame vs minute pips, have a much clearer and more accurate view on how the market is moving. This means better accuracy, lower risk and higher reward potential for each trade.

End of day trading is not about jumping into the markets with a flame thrower, torching every signal you see. It is about identifying the higher priority, “A+ signals”, and capitalizing on them with a single swift and decisive move.

Scalping and day trading is a losing battle, it will burn you out and make you very bitter with the markets. Even some traders who contact me who have found some limited success with day trading don’t want to continue with it any more due to the high levels of mental fatigue.

Trading using the daily candle closing price is a refreshing, and positive change from lower time frames – you will find better clarity, higher accuracy and just really feel like you’re trading in a mature, professional manner.

Leveraging end of day trading with positive geared risk reward money management is an effective way to reduce the required win rate to turn over consistent profit. Some models only need a 30% win rate to turn over profit in the long run.

Supplementing End of day trading With New York close candles.

End of day trading strategies are focused mainly on using the daily time frame and it’s easy to see why.

Every broker operating in the market has a slightly different price feed to the next. This means that their daily candles open and close at different times.

New York close candles are considered to be the industry standard by many traders, and essential for end of day trading strategies. Most brokers are actually making the switch to a New York close price feed, because they know that’s what we want.

The closing price is one of the most important pieces of data on your chart. It can tell you a lot about a session, for example:

The bullish power vs bearish power that session If the market was able to break through a level If the market was unable to break a level and caused a failed breakout If the market was decisive or indecisive Communicate the strength of a price action signal.

The closing price of the rejection candle above communicates the intense bearish pressure with this signal. I call these ‘thick body’ rejection candles and they generally have a much better follow through rate.

Sometimes its just those subtle things that you overlook, like the closing price , that can give you a critical information to anticipate future price movements.

If you’re going to start using the end of day approach, make sure you tune into a New York close price feed.

Taking advantage of stop and limit orders.

The best way to interact with the market is by keeping your time in front of the screen to a minimum by using pending orders.

There are two types of pending orders, “stop” or “limit” orders.

The technical differences between the two are beyond the scope of this article. To keep things simple, all you need to know is – stop orders are the best option for breakouts, while limit orders are best used for catching retracement entries.

Here is an example of how we used a ‘buy stop’ order to automatically catch the breakout of this Inside Day signal.

The Inside Day is one of my favorite end of day breakout frameworks.

By implementing this kind of “set and forget” approach with a buy stop order – you don’t have to sit it in front of the screen and wait for the breakout to occur. The buy stop order will automatically trigger you in if one occurs.

This removes emotion from the equation, because you are letting the market take the reins from here on. The trade will either trigger and work out, or hit your stop loss – or not even trigger at all.

Set and forget married with end of day trading is a very powerful combination.

Why You Should Trade End-Of-Day, Not Intra-Day.

Many traders email me asking how they can trade with their busy schedule or say that they don’t have time to sit in front of their computer watching the markets all day. My answer is usually something along the lines of: “Well you don’t have to sit in front of your computer all day if you learn to trade end-of-day Forex strategies”. Now, by ‘end-of-day’, I simply mean after the New York close; it doesn’t have to be exactly at the New York close, but generally there’s a large gap of time between the NY close and the London open where trading is very quiet (the Asian session), and this is the best time to analyze the daily charts and make your trading decisions. This is what I mean when I say “ end-of-day trading ”.

You might be wondering why I am not a big fan of intra-day trading. Well, the reasons are pretty simple; there is more random price movement or market ‘noise’ on the intra-day charts, and they thus contain more ‘clutter’ and are just more difficult to trade than the daily charts. For a skilled trader who is already successful, intra-day trading might be something to consider. But, if you are a beginner, a struggling trader, or simply someone who doesn’t have a lot of time each day to devote to trading, trading the daily charts in an end-of-day manner is going to be your best option.

Keep your day job.

End-of-day trading basically allows you to fit in trading around your schedule, whatever it may be. You can keep your day job with no problems. Many people seem to think that if they can’t sit and watch the markets all day then they can’t trade, this is simply not true.

In fact, being away from the market is actually good for you – this is a ‘hidden’ advantage to end-of-day trading. Since you won’t be as involved with the markets you will have a ‘natural filter’ against over-trading and this will likely increase your bottom line at the end of the year. It’s a statistically proven fact that low-frequency traders make more money over the long-run than high-frequency traders, on average.

As an end-of-day Forex trader you can live your life exactly as you are now, but instead of spending 30 minutes watching television at night, you can simply analyze the markets according to your trading plan and look for price action trading setups. It might seem too good to be true, but really it’s not; the truth of the matter is that once you learn an effective trading strategy and develop into an effective trading plan, you really do not need to spend hours analyzing the markets each day.

Less clutter on your charts and in your brain.

Humans have a tendency to make trading far more complicated than it really is. I am not saying that trading is ‘easy’, because as we all know it’s not easy to make consistent money in the markets. But, most people make the entire process of trading far too complicated, and really the analysis part of trading is actually very simple. The difficult aspect of trading lies in taking profits and remaining unemotional. Deciding to enter or not is the easiest decision you have to make in the markets; essentially it all boils down to this; there’s either a signal or there’s not .

Once you have learned and mastered an effective trading strategy like price action, you then need to formulate it into a trading plan . After that, it’s as simple as checking the markets each day after the New York close and seeing if your trading edge is present. Once you develop this into a routine it really should not take more than 30 minutes or so for you to decide if there’s a signal worth trading. I get emails from traders everyday telling me they are frustrated and confused and then they tell me they are using forex indicators and checking the markets all day…they simply cannot see the forest for the trees! Meaning, the REASON they are frustrated and confused is because they are over-complicating the easiest part of trading, which is analyzing the charts and looking for a trading signal.

More ‘bang for your buck’

What I mean by ‘more bang for your buck’ is that by being a daily chart end-of-day trader you are making more effective and efficient use of your time. Since daily chart signals are more powerful and contain more ‘weight’ than intraday signals, it means your time is better spent analyzing the daily charts after the NY close where you can simply check the markets for a signal real quick and then walk away. Any signal you find is likely to be much more significant than a signal you may have found earlier in the day or night on an intra-day chart. Thus, you are getting more out of spending less time in the markets by focusing on the daily charts rather than sitting at your computer all day trying to trade the intra-day charts.

HOW to trade end-of-day.

Another email question I often get is “How do I trade end of day” or “What is end of day trading ”? So, this next part should clearly answer those questions, and if you email me about it I am going to refer you to this article ;)! So, let’s discuss how to trade Forex (or any market) end-of-day:

Remember this: 30 minutes a day is all you need to analyze the markets and find your entry or manage your trades:

• It ALL starts with the signal – You scan your favorite markets and first look for a clear signal of one of the setups in your trading plan. After you have mastered your trading strategy this should be a very easy and quick task, taking no more than about 10 to 15 minutes. You are simply looking at the daily chart time frames for obvious instances of your trading edge. If nothing stands out to you after 10 minutes or so of analyzing the markets, there probably is nothing worth risking your money on. Where traders get into trouble is when they don’t see an obvious signal right away and then keep looking until they convince themselves there’s something worth trading, even though there isn’t. This is a very easy trap to fall into and you’ve got to ignore that temptation to ‘dig up’ something to trade when there is nothing ‘ripe’ staring you in the face.

• Looking for levels – Match a signal up to a level; if you find an obvious price action setup the next thing you’ll do is see if it lines up with any obvious level(s). You’ll have to draw in the key daily chart levels at the start of the week and then analyze and adjust them if needed each day after the New York close. This is also not something that will take much time after you get some education under your belt and understand what a key level is vs. a level that isn’t as significant. Here’s a video on drawing support and resistance levels.

• Gauge market conditions – Is the market trending or consolidating…? If it’s trending is it in a strong trend or is it slowly grinding higher or lower? Is the market in distinct trading range? Where are the obvious key boundaries of the trading range? Make sure your signal makes sense in the context of the current market conditions. For example, maybe you see a decent looking pin bar strategy but it’s against a very strong trend…probably not the best setup then.

• Make your own daily commentary – Making a daily commentary of your favorite markets is a good way to get an objective view of the charts each day. Using the guidelines in your trading plan and the three points above, go over your favorite markets each day and make notes about what you see, actually write or type it out so that it becomes a habit. Then once you finish with your top 5 or 10 favorite markets, go back and re-read your comments and see if anything really stands out to you. This process will give you a good overview of what’s happening in the market and will help you better understand the overall market picture and whether or not anything is worth trading…it will help you stay “in tune” with the markets and will work to develop your discretionary trading sense. This is one of the biggest things that helped me become successful in the markets.

• When you’re done, you’re done – Once you go through your daily ‘end-of-day routine’, you have two possible outcomes: there’s either a trade or there’s not . Either way you should walk away. You either enter your trade parameters or you do nothing, and either way you should leave your charts until the next day, then come back and see what happened. This act alone will almost completely cut out the temptation to over-trade, which is most trader’s biggest downfall. You aren’t going to help anything by looking at the markets and staring at your trades. Sure, you might nip a couple of would-be losers early, but in the long-run you’re only going to end up cutting your winners short, closing trades at breakeven, and generally just interfering in your trades when you shouldn’t.

This 24 hour break from the markets shows that you release your arrogance and that you truly understand you can’t control the markets. Let the market do the work for you , you should have already accepted your risk on the trade…you should basically assume you are going to lose on the trade, so that every time you come back the next day and see a winning trade it’s a nice surprise, and a loser is not a disappointment but rather something you already expected. It’s when people expect to win on every trade that they start becoming emotional.

Summing up the end-of-day trading strategy.

As you can see, end-of-day trading is not only a good strategy, but it’s also a philosophy. The philosophy of not being glued to your charts, of accepting that the market will do what it wants, and of generally just being less involved with the markets is a mature trading philosophy that shows understanding of how the markets work and of how the trading game is won. It really allows you to release that ‘need’ to be right and to control everything in your trading. So, even as you become more experienced and perhaps want to trade lower time frame charts, this philosophy of briefly checking the markets for your trading edge, making a decision and then walking away, will still benefit you and can still be used . Yep. from being a 15 minute or 30 mins scalper glued to the screens much of the time for 3 months, I now set my trades as Nial said, end of day, well for the last few months. Still have to have a sneak look at the trades in the night on my android, and yep, I am guilty of what he says, close the trade too early (many many times I have done this) or at break even through panic. I need to take Nial’s advice and let he market do the work.

After losing almost 60% of my account in the intraday trading, with a lot of indicators in my charts, that by the way looks more like a Christmas tree, with different colors. I like the idea of end of day trading but what are your comments with regards to the spreads which are at their widest after the US trading session ends.

Your articles have wise understanding and how to avoid the common traps the some traders develop.

It is also encouraging of how we dont need to make it so hard to be successful. Whilst I am not a member as yet, due to being away from home, it is helping me to make the decision to become a member, as soon as we return back from our sojurn. Previously, I have been with another currency learning company, and have become frozen with fear with how difficult they made it for some of us. So many indicators and 1hourly and 15min charts and daily and weekly and fib retracements to try to learn. Some people may appreciate what I am saying.

I just want to enjoy a slow and steady learning curve, if that is possible? The hare and the tortoise, maybe?

Funny that something that looks so simple can be so hard to do, staying focused and follow your plan, stay out of the bad setups (those that aren’t any real setup).

there is alot of choppiness/noise in hourly, 4hour and even the daily charts too!– at the end of the day - it boils down to your ability to read and understand your charts-if you do not understand how to effectively read a chart - to a good standard – then changing to a daily timeframe or any other timeframe for that matter will not help you!

Hey, another great article for the many of us that are not yet fortunate to do this full time but want to develop the correct skills part-time and make money. I am just in my second month after taking your course, and following your direction and it’s working quite nicely. I am actually glad that I currently work full-time because I am sure the markets would lure me in to watch the intra-day trading.

For those of you that may be new I recommend taking Nial’s Forex Course and reading his daily commentary. He has been doing this for a long time and consistently making money. It is rare today that someone like Nial is willing to give all of us this gift each day.

Thanks for the advice Nial. I have actually tried this strategy twice with price action and it has worked because my trades were really successful making my profit targets for the week just overnight. Intraday trading can be tough some times.

The hardest part of trading is the “WAITING” for a signal.

Only getting one look a day (Daily chart) really requires tons of patience. More experience with trading will eventually bring us that ultimate prize we are all in this.

Great advice as usual Nial. It’s the only way I trade. The Daily charts take into account practically ever trading session so you can see the opinions of practically the entire world in 1 candlestick. My account has been steadily climbing since mastering one strategy and looking for setups only on the daily charts! Since I only spend about 10 hours a month analyzing the markets this sets up the foundation for a true trader’s lifestyle.

After the N. Y. all currencies seem to be still moving. So how do you set up a set and forget strategy while the market continues to move. That trading that goes on after the market closes in N. Y. a person has to be quick to set the entry, and stop placement. I understand there is a large gap between the N. Y. close and the London Open. So any movement in the market after the close of the N. Y. market until the opening of the London Exchange is caused by the activity going on in the Asian market. The “set and forget strategy” I am still trying to get a handle on.

Sounds good however only checking for daily trades will lead to many lost oppoetunities from say 8 hr, 6 hr, 4hr charts. I do the daily routine then go for these time frames as well.

Looking only once every 24 hrs will lead to boredom inho!
